New Mississippi State coach Joe Moorhead is continuing to fill out his coaching staff in Starkville.

The Bulldogs officially hired assistant coaches Bob Shoop and Marcus Johnson on Sunday afternoon.

Shoop will assume the role of defensive coordinator and safeties coach while Johnson will oversee the offensive line.

Shoop was previously the defensive coordinator under Butch Jones at Tennessee. The Vols’ defense had good moments under Shoop, but struggled in 2017 due to injuries. Shoop has also led the defense and coached safeties at Penn State and Vanderbilt.

“This is a privilege to be a part of the Mississippi State family and join Coach Moorhead’s staff,” Shoop said in a statement. “I am excited to get to know our team and get to work. The foundation is here to have an outstanding football team, and I look forward to developing our players and maximizing their potential.”

Johnson comes to Starkville by way of Duke, where he led the Blue Devils’ offensive line. He’s a Mississippi native, hailing from Coffeyville, Miss.

“We would like to welcome Marcus back to his home state,” Moorhead said in the statement. “Our players are going to enjoy playing for him. He was an All-SEC lineman and played in the NFL. He knows what it takes to be tough, physical and successful in this league.”
