Minnesota’s P.J. Fleck: ‘If Michigan beats Michigan State you’d be surprised’

Michigan State enters its weekend matchup against Minnesota riding high after an upset win over in-state rival Michigan last weekend. But that win did not come as a shock the Gophers’ head coach.

P.J. Fleck was asked about Michigan State’s win in the lead up to Minnesota’s Saturday night meeting with the Spartans in Minneapolis. Fleck, who coached for four seasons at Western Michigan, said that Michigan State beating the Wolverines has become the norm lately.

“I think it’d almost be the other way,” Fleck said when asked if he was surprised by the Michigan State win. “If Michigan beats Michigan State you’d be surprised.”

Fleck has a point. Michigan State has now defeated Michigan in eight of their last 10 meetings. But Michigan was a 12.5-point home favorite on Saturday, and the Spartans were two weeks removed from a 20-point loss to Notre Dame at home.

Saturday’s outcome was a surprise to most college football fans.

Maybe Fleck was just trying to compliment his team’s next opponent. But it could be a comment the Wolverines — and Michigan fans — take the wrong way. Minnesota visits Michigan at the Big House on Nov. 4.
