Minkah Fitzpatrick relives National Championship Game in heartfelt farewell letter to Alabama

In Minkah Fitzpatrick’s final moments as an Alabama football player, all he could do was watch as the Crimson Tide’s offense tried to beat Georgia in overtime of the National Championship Game.

As you could expect, quite a lot was going through Fitzpatrick’s mind as his college career was coming to a close. He certainly didn’t want it to end in defeat.

On Wednesday, Fitzpatrick’s heartfelt goodbye letter to Alabama was posted on The Players’ Tribune, and the former Tide defensive back shared just exactly how he was feeling during those final moments of that win in the National Championship Game.

When things looked bleak for Alabama before the final play, Fitzpatrick kept thinking about a year prior when the Tide lost in the final seconds to Clemson.

“I really didn’t want to go out like that,” Fitzpatrick wrote. “But just as I felt that negativity creeping in, Tua [Tagovailoa] took the snap, and I saw all four of our receivers flying down the field. From there, the play developed in slow motion before my eyes. My first thought was that this is a bold call.”

It may have been bold, but it resulted in a game-winning touchdown pass. And Fitzpatrick’s career had just ended with a national title.

“I think it took everyone like half a second to process what had just gone down before the entire sideline freaked out and ran onto the field,” Fitzpatrick wrote. “Well, everybody except me. I couldn’t move. I must have sat there for two minutes, or maybe it was 20 seconds. Either way, I knew I needed to wait a beat so I that could really savor that moment.”

Fitzpatrick also shared his thoughts on Alabama coach Nick Saban, as well as what it was like to play for the Crimson Tide as a whole. He is leaving school a year early to play in the NFL.

And at the end of his letter, Fitzpatrick shared just how important Alabama has become to him over the past few years.

“New Jersey is home. It always will be. But Bama, that’s family,” Fitzpatrick wrote. “From the bottom of my heart, thank you. And Roll Tide.”
