Miles Bridges named top National Player of the Year candidate by Sports Illustrated

Miles Bridges’ decision to return to Michigan State for his sophomore season has led to high expectations — both for the Spartans and for Bridges.

Michigan State is expected to begin the 2017-18 campaign near the top of the polls nationally. And Bridges is also being viewed as one of the country’s best players.

Tuesday, Sports Illustrated published a list of its top 10 candidates to win National Player of the Year. Bridges, a Spartans forward, was No. 1.

“He scores efficiently from both sides of the arc, rebounds his position well and should appear on  SportsCenter’s Top 10 at least a few times for a jaw-dropping dunk or a forceful rejection,” SI’s Chris Johnson wrote. “The narrative allure of Bridges’s choice to buck the one-and-done path will help his cause.”

Bridges — who averaged 16.9 points and 8.3 rebounds per game as a freshman in 2016-17 — edged Duke’s Grayson Allen, Arizona’s Alonzo Trier and Kansas’ Devonte’ Graham for the top spot on the list.

The Spartans start their season on Nov. 10 against North Florida.
