Former Virginia Tech defensive star Tremaine Edmunds sits on top at No. 1 on NFL draft expert Mike Mayock’s list of top linebackers available in the 2018 NFL Draft. But if he had included Edmunds on his list of edge rushers instead, the Hokies star might have been No. 1 there too.
Mayock absolutely raved about Edmunds during an NFL Network conference call on Monday, calling his skill set ‘unique.’
“The beauty of this kid is he’s 19 years old, he’s 6-5 (feet tall) and 250 (pounds) – at 19 years old,” Mayock said. “He doesn’t turn 20 until a couple days after the draft.
“I put the first tape in on this kid, and today, he’s an off-the-ball linebacker, meaning in a 3-4 (defense), he’s an inside linebacker. He’d be great there. He also has a scary skill set as an edge rusher, which he did a little bit of at Virginia Tech, and I know for sure, he’s working on that now.”
Edmunds recorded 109 tackles, including 14.0 for loss during his junior season in 2017. He also posted 5.5 sacks and 3 forced fumbles.
Given that he will be one of the youngest players in the NFL next season, he should only get better. His age makes Edmunds perhaps the defender with the most upside in the 2018 draft.
“Right now, what I see is a starting off-the-ball linebacker and a potential sub at edge rusher.”
When asked if Edmunds reminds him of anybody already in the NFL, Mayock laughed and said:
“No, that’s my point. That’s the definition of unique. There’s only one of them.”
