Mike Gundy recalls offensive coordinator days under Les Miles

It’s been over a decade since Les Miles was head coach at Oklahoma State and Mike Gundy was his offensive coordinator.

Gundy, of course, is now the Cowboys’ head man and Miles? Well, he has a podcast.

The two coaches linked up on Miles’ show,  Les is More, last Wednesday, which Gundy addressed during his press conference on Monday.

Gundy called the plays for the Cowboys as Miles’ offensive coordinator, but he shared some insight to the work dynamic between the former and current Oklahoma State head coaches.

“I visited with Coaches Miles a week ago, and we had a nice visit,” Gundy said on Monday. “… He and I had a nice conversation on the phone for about an hour the other day.

“And the time that I was an offensive coordinator for him, he was famous for … I called all the plays, but once we got on the 5-yard line, he’d get on the phones and say, ‘I’ve got it from here, I’m good.’ He loved to take over on the goal line because of his history at Michigan with two tight ends, three tight ends, fullbacks and all that.”

It was a fun story shared by Gundy, who said Miles badly wants to coach again and believes he will one day.

Miles was fired from LSU a season ago after taking over the Tigers football program in 2005. Miles’ departure for LSU opened the door for Gundy to take over Oklahoma State’s program. It seems the coaches have remained friends through the years.
