Michigan-Texas preview

Michigan followed up a disappointing loss at Ohio State in which it blew a 20-point lead by pulling off a comeback of its own against UCLA. Down 46-31 six minutes into the second half, the Wolverines tied the score at 65 at the end of regulation and then outscored the Bruins 13-4 in overtime for their biggest win of the season. It’s a win that should look good on the March resume.

A road win at Texas would also look very good. The Wolverines will have to do better than making just 8 of 22 free throws and having top 3-point threats Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman and Duncan Robinson convert a combined 2 of 11 from behind the arc. It’s a testament to the team’s resiliency and its defense down the stretch that it survived those two stats.

Junior forward Moe Wagner scored 23 points while sophomore guard Charles Matthews keyed the comeback with an aggressive attitude on offense that often saw him driving to the basket. Matthews was one of the top culprits when it came to the poor free throw shooting as he was just 2 of 10 from the line, yet he still scored 20 points. Michigan is starting to find a rhythm at point guard as freshman Eli Brooks again started while sophomore Zavier Simpson came off the bench and played 24 minutes

Simpson scored 15 points and produced 4 steals.

Texas has four players averaging double figures in scoring, led by sophomore Andrew Jones’ 15.3-points per game. Freshman Mohamed Bamba is averaging 10.7 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. The 7-foot power forward took a visit to Michigan during recruiting before deciding on Texas.
