Michigan State recruiting: 4-star CB Kalon Gervin sets decision date, former Spartans target Dorian Hardy leaves school

On the banks of the Red Cedar, recruiting never stops. We’re here every step of the way to keep you informed with our  daily notebook. Recruiting questions? Comment below or direct them to  lucas.srodulski@coxinc.com, and we’ll do our best to get them answered.

Kalon Gervin sets commitment date

Michigan State football probably has three remaining spots in its 2018 class, which already has 18 players committed. A few areas of need stick out: running back, wide receiver, defensive tackle and maybe even punter. It would be nice to give an incoming punter a redshirt year before current junior Jake Hartbarger departs.

One spot that doesn’t seem to be a high priority is cornerback. The Spartans don’t have a senior at the position. Freshman Josiah Scott and sophomore Justin Layne are the starters. Four defensive backs who potentially could play cornerback have committed to Michigan State’s 2018 class, with 3-star prospects Chris Jackson and Davion Williams almost certain to play at that position.

And yet, as long as Kalon Gervin is available, Michigan State will pursue him. The Detroit Cass Tech senior, a 4-star cornerback in the 247Sports composite ratings, has been on the Spartans’ radar since before he entered high school. He picked up an offer as a sophomore. And late in a rocky recruitment that included a brief commitment to Notre Dame, Gervin has the Spartans in mind as a decision date approaches.

Gervin told MLive that he will reveal his commitment on Dec. 2. That’s not far from the start of the new early signing period on Dec. 20. Whoever gets his verbal commitment might just get his signed letter of intent a few weeks later.

And a group of six schools appears to be in consideration for him: Michigan State, Florida, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon and Virginia Tech. The 247Sports crystal ball favors the Hokies, but Michigan State has gained steam recently. With nearly two months to go before the decision date, don’t be surprised to see some alterations to the list.

Gervin stands 5-foot-11 and ranks as the No. 22 cornerback in the nation and the third-best prospect in Michigan.

Former Michigan State target Dorian Hardy embroiled in controversy

You might remember the name Dorian Hardy. Before the 4-star Paramus (N.J.) Catholic defensive end committed to Penn State, the Spartans had been in hot pursuit — as was much of the country.

Now Hardy reportedly finds himself without a team after the Nittany Lions rescinded his offer. According to NJ.com, Hardy and teammate Jonathan Clark (a Central Michigan commit) allegedly beat a 14-year-old freshman so badly during a post-practice brawl that he was diagnosed with a concussion, suffered a seizure and was hospitalized.

Hardy’s father said the freshman’s father, Paramus Catholic assistant coach Michael Mitchell, punched Hardy during the melee. Mitchell reportedly has since been fired.

By all accounts, regardless of association, this was a sad, ugly scene. Hopefully, the worst has come to pass.

Will Michigan State pursue Dorian Hardy?

A question came in from a Michigan State fan shortly after this news broke: Might the Spartans bring Hardy in for a visit?

Let’s preface this by noting the more important points: A teenager was hospitalized with serious injuries. Another is without a full ride to college and may end up facing other consequences as more details arise. A school employee may have punched a minor.

Now to the question — and the answer should be clear. Michigan State dismissed four players charged with sexual assault last year, but it has not washed itself clean. The Spartans need to keep a sparkling reputation off the field, especially considering they retained a player in Demetrius Cooper who reached a plea deal after allegedly spitting on a parking officer and then violated that plea agreement.

People make poor decisions, and hopefully Hardy will learn from his. But at a point when Michigan State is working to rebuild its image, recruiting him would be unwise.
