Justin Rogers to return to Michigan State

Michigan State often moves more slowly with in-state prospects than it does with those from farther away. The coaches like to bring players in for multiple visits and get to know them on a personal level before extending an offer.

The Spartans did just that with Oak Park (Mich.) offensive guard Justin Rogers, a 5-star prospect and the No. 1 sophomore in Michigan per the 247Sports composite rankings. They constantly invited him to visit to the point where Rogers said Michigan State “feels like home.” But they moved more quickly than usual, making him the first in-state sophomore they’ve offered.

That happened Sept. 2, and now Rogers is set to come back once again. He shared his plans Thursday on Twitter.

Michigan State, of course, will be out of town Saturday taking on Minnesota. But the squad will be back Sunday, and Rogers will visit then. These trips can often be more productive than coming in on gameday, because they allow recruits to get more 1-on-1 time with the staff.

Rogers visited Michigan last weekend to see the Wolverines fall to Michigan State, which might have added an extra bit of satisfaction for the coaches. He attended the game with his teammate, 4-star sophomore defensive back Enzo Jennings, who might just be the next in-state 2020 prospect to land a Spartans offer.

Rogers and Jennings — who team up with 4-star QB and Michigan State commit Dwan Mathis at Oak Park — both landed Tennessee offers Thursday.

Izzo reportedly visits nation’s top basketball player

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo isn’t messing around recruiting the 2019 class. He’s going right to the top, with eyes on the nation’s No. 1 junior, 5-star University School (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) forward Vernon Carey Jr.

Izzo reportedly visited Carey at school Thursday, according to OHR Exposure’s Jake Weingarten, two weeks after Carey visited Michigan State. The 6-foot-9 star told Scout’s Brian Snow that no schools have prioritized him like the Spartans.

It’s early, as juniors won’t sign their letters of intent until more than a year from now. But Izzo and his staff aren’t wasting any time trying to get a step ahead.

Prep football games to watch

Michigan State has to focus on one game and one game only this weekend, but that doesn’t mean you have, too. We’ve listed several prep games involving Spartans commits for you to keep an eye on in the lead up to the Saturday night showdown.

University of Detroit Jesuit at Gabriel Richard (Ann Arbor, Mich.)
Time: 7 p.m. ET, Friday

This Gabriel Richard team kept Michigan State quarterback commit Theo Day very much in check last week, holding him to 38 yards on 6 of 8 passing. Now running back commit Elijah Collins will get a shot at the Fighting Irish team that held Day’s Divine Child squad to 14 points.

Olentangy Liberty (Powell, Ohio) at Olentangy (Lewis Center, Ohio)
Time: 7 p.m. ET, Friday

Finally, another matchup of Michigan State commits. Twin defensive linemen Jacob and Zach Slade and Olentangy will host linebacker commit Edward Warinner and Olentangy Liberty. They might even go up against each other, as Jacob plays a little offensive line and Zach occasionally takes some carries.

Pickerington (Ohio) Central at Pickerington (Ohio) North
Time: 7 p.m. ET, Friday

This big rivalry game will pit a pair of one-loss teams and Ohio state title contenders against each other. Central fields 4-star Michigan State commits Trenton Gillison and Xavier Henderson, a dynamic duo that has led the Tigers to four straight wins.

Chaminade (West Hills, Fla.) at Loyola (Los Angeles)
Time: 7 p.m. ET, Friday

OK, this one might not be a particularly great game. Chaminade will probably dominate Loyola. But this game will allow you to see Chaminade star defensive end and Michigan State commit Parks Gissinger, as it’s scheduled to be live streamed (for a small fee).
