Michigan State-Penn State series history
Michigan State and Penn State have met 31 times in their history, with the first meeting coming in 1914. The series is deadlocked at 15-15-1, but the Spartans hold a 9-5 edge in East Lansing.
Since coach Mark Dantonio’s arrival at Michigan State, the Spartans have faced the Nittany Lions seven times and have won four. He and the Spartans won their first two games against coach James Franklin and Penn State before falling in 2016.
Before Penn State joined the Big Ten, Michigan State dominated the series with an 8-1-1 record. But since the Nittany Lions started competing in the conference in 1993, they have beaten the Spartans in 14 of 21 games.
When Penn State joined the league and the two teams were designated rivals, Michigan State coach George Perles designed the Land Grant Trophy for which they have battled since.
The Nittany Lions currently have the trophy after rolling over Michigan State in 2016. The Spartans held a 12-10 lead in the game before Penn State exploded with 4 passing touchdowns of longer than 30 yards. Michigan State’s passing defense has been much improved in 2017, ranking third in the Big Ten with 168.7 yards allowed per game.
Penn State, on the other hand, ranks second in the conference with 289.9 passing yards per game. And while Michigan State leads the conference in total defense, the Nittany Lions lead the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 9.6 points per game.
