Michigan suffered its worst loss in two seasons when it fell 42-13 at No. 2 Penn State on Saturday night. It is the same score the Wolverines lost to Ohio State in the 2015 regular-season finale.
While the loss dropped the Wolverines to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the Big Ten East, they remain No. 5 in the Land of 10 Power Poll for Week 8. Penn State (7-0) was again the unanimous No. 1 choice in balloting by Land of 10 staff, followed by Ohio State, Wisconsin and Michigan State.
Michigan hosts Rutgers on Saturday at noon ET in a game between teams tied for fourth in the East.
Michigan showed poise and resiliency in fighting back from an early 14-0 deficit to get to within 1 point, 14-13. The defense got a pick-me-up with David Long’s interception, and the offense responded with two sustained drives that were finished off with touchdown runs in the red zone. The momentum didn’t last as Penn State scored the final 28 points.
I voted Michigan fifth on my ballot. It’s apparent the top 4 teams in the conference have separated themselves from the rest of the field. Michigan still has plenty to play for, especially with games against Wisconsin and Ohio State the final two weeks of the season. The Wolverines won’t win the Big Ten title this year, but that doesn’t mean the season is over.
Here is a look at how I voted this week:
- Penn State
- Ohio State
- Michigan State
