Michigan-Iowa preview

Michigan has been good this season when it comes to taking care of business against teams it should beat, and Iowa certainly fits into that category. The Hawkeyes are attempting to avoid their first losing record since 2010-11 when they finished 11-20 in coach Fran McCaffery’s first season.

The Wolverines won at Iowa on Jan. 2, 75-68, behind 15 points by Zavier Simpson and 13 points off the bench by Isaiah Livers. Junior Moe Wagner was playing just his second game back from an ankle sprain and scored just 4 points in 16 minutes on the floor. Wagner is healthy this time around and he is coming off consecutive 20-point games at Northwestern and Wisconsin. He’s done most of his scoring inside the 3-point arc; Wagner 15 of 24 from the field in the last two games but only 4 of those made field goals has been from long range.

Wagner leads the team in scoring (14.6 points per game) and rebounding (7.4).

Simpson is needs just one more assist to reach 100 for the season. It would give Michigan its 10th straight season with a player reaching triple digits in assists. The Wolverines are No. 8 in the country and No. 2 in the Big Ten with a 1.58 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Iowa has four players averaging double figures in scoring, led by forward Tyler Cook with 15.4 points per game. Cook also leads Iowa with 6.5 rebounds per game. Guard Jordan Bohannon is averaging 13.6 points and making 44.1 percent of his 3-point attempts. The Hawkeyes average 80.1 points per game as a team — third in the Big Ten — while Michigan leads the conference in scoring defense, allowing 63.7 points per game.
