Michigan-Houston basketball preview
Michigan overcame a choppy start against Montana to reach the round of 32 for the second consecutive season, and it did it with little contribution from Moritz Wagner, particularly in the first half. Wagner finished with only 5 points and was unable to make the impact many expected. But Michigan also got into foul trouble early, committed a few turnovers and climbed back from an early double-digit deficit against the Grizzlies.
In stepped Charles Matthews, who scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Matthews’ performance against Montana became a testament to Michigan’s depth and range, and Michigan’s bench also came through against the Grizzlies. Jaaron Simmons scored 6 points off the bench, while Duncan Robinson added 7 points.
“But this game was kind of like our ice-breaker,” Simmons said Friday. “We haven’t played in a long time. After this game, I think we’ll be able to go from the jump the next game.”
While Michigan’s offense struggled at times against Montana, its defense was stout. The Wolverines held the Grizzlies scoreless for a stretch of nearly 10 minutes in the second half.
The Cougars, however, anticipate a breakout game from Wagner, as well as a much crisper game from the Wolverines in the second-round matchup. The Wolverines, meanwhile, face a program that’s quickly become one of the tournament darlings. The Cougars (27-7) earned their first NCAA Tournament win since 1984 on Thursday.
Houston guard Rob Gray scored 39 points in the Cougars’ first-round win Thursday against San Diego State, including the game-winning shot with 1.1 seconds left in regulation.
Gray averages 19.2 points per game, while Corey Davis Jr. averages 13.4 points and Devin Davis 10.7. Houston faces a top-10 nationally ranked scoring defense in Michigan (63.1 points), but the Cougars are eighth in the country in field-goal percentage defense (39.6 percent).
Cougars coach Kelvin Sampson will face the Wolverines for the first time in more than 10 years, when he coached at Indiana. Michigan defeated Indiana 78-64 on Jan. 8, 2008 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The winner of the game Saturday advances to the Sweet Sixteen on Thursday in Los Angeles.
