With only bowl games remaining in this college football season, it’s time for some analysts to start looking toward next year. Chris Hummer of 247sports compiled a list of 18 players who he believes will have a breakout 2018 season with more playing time.
Among the players on Hummer’s list is Miami cornerback Trajan Bandy.
Hummer writes that Bandy, a true freshman, should emerge as a full-time starter in 2018. Despite the fact that he played fewer snaps than Miami’s starters last season, Bandy was graded by Pro Football Focus as one of the Hurricanes’ most effective members of the secondary.
“The Miami native doesn’t have overwhelming size at 5-foot-9, 180 pounds, but he has good speed, anticipation and coverage instincts to help make up for that,” Hummer wrote.
Miami’s secondary was excellent this season, and all four starting cornerbacks and safeties are eligible to return next year, though there has been some speculation that safety Jaquan Johnson could leave for the NFL. Regardless, Hummer believes Bandy’s play this season will allow him to nab one of the staring spots.
This season, Bandy has logged 22 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and one interception, which allowed him to don Miami’s iconic Turnover Chain. If Hummer’s prediction is correct, Hurricane fans could see the sight of Bandy with the gold chain draped around his neck a lot more next season.
