Miami recruiting: Hurricanes’ strong start impresses pair of IMG juniors

Miami recruiting-Evan Neal-Noah Cain

Miami is on its way to one of the best recruiting classes in the nation, and David Wilson and the DieHards.com team are in the eye of the storm to help you track the Hurricanes. Read daily notebooks here at 10 a.m. ET Monday through Friday and follow us on Twitter for the latest Miami recruiting news.

With 11 seconds left in Miami’s 24-20 win against Florida State, if you were looking at the sidelines you could get a glimpse into the style Mark Richt coaches with.

He wanted to let Malik Rosier take one last shot at the end zone. He wanted to let his quarterback make a play – as long as he didn’t try to do too much.

Watching the game on TV, Evan Neal could read the coach’s lips. It was exactly the sort of message he likes to see.

“I like the way coach Mark Richt coaches. Even in the Florida State game, I was watching. It even showed him on the TV. I read his lips. He said, ‘Be smart. Take the shot,'” said Neal, a 4-star guard from IMG Academy. “I like those type of coaches.”

Wins like the one Saturday are games Richt can point to when he meets with recruits during the next couple months. They serve as proof he has the Hurricanes moving in the right direction after years of wallowing in mediocrity.

The path to a Class of 2019 as good as its Class of 2018 for Miami could go through Bradenton, Fla., where two of the Hurricanes’ most highly touted targets are playing for IMG. Neal is arguably most important. The 6-foot-8, 385-pound offensive lineman is considered the No. 5 guard by 247Sports composite rankings. He has the ability to play either tackle or guard at the next level and considering Miami’s dearth of tackles in this class, he’ll be a priority.

The entire start to the season has been encouraging for Neal, who is also considering the Seminoles, Alabama and Georgia. The win against Florida State only solidified his early optimism.

“Watching Miami lose to Florida State for the past seven years and then to win the game with 11 seconds left on the clock, that’s big time,” Neal said.

The win and strong start left the same sort of impression on Noah Cain. The 5-star running back is the top-ranked junior at his position and has frequently listed the Hurricanes among his favorites.

The 5-11, 215-pound back went a little more in depth about Miami on Tuesday. To him – and most recruits – it’s not just about rivalry wins, but there’s no denying it helps.

“They were close to beating them last year and that was kind of a depleted team, so this year to get that win at Florida State, that’s big time for them national-wise,” Cain said. “They’re going to keep building from there.”
