Miami recruiting: Another Friday, another big game for Lorenzo Lingard

Lorenzo Lingard-Miami recruiting-Will Mallory

Playoff time is fast approaching in Florida, which means even some of the best Miami recruiting commits and targets will have their seasons come to an end soon. They’re not going to go down without producing some wild highlights, though.

Even in losses, a handful of future Hurricanes delivered some of their best games of the season. Lorenzo Lingard kept doing what he does every week, and Miami’s top tight end commits each delivered impressive outings. And don’t forget about special teams – the Hurricanes’ kicker of the future produced a highlight of his own.

Here are the top performers from the weekend:

RB Lorenzo Lingard

Class: 2018

High school: University (Orange City, Fla.)

Size: 6-foot-2, 190 pounds

247Sports composite ranking: No. 2 running back, No. 21 overall

Recruitment status: Committed to Miami on Feb. 9

University High School’s playoff hopes took a hit Friday against Lake Mary (Fla.) High School, but Lingard wasn’t to blame. The 5-star running back ran for 144 yards and 2 touchdowns on 22 carries during University’s 49-20 loss in Orange City. The senior also added 42 yards on 3 catches.

The standout play of Lingard’s outing was when he hurdled a Lake Mary defender during a run down the right sideline. The running back finds a new way to impress every weekend whether it is with his speed, power, shiftiness or agility.

Maybe his greatest skill is his durability. The Titans played four games in 21 days during the last month. Lingard went for 956 yards and 14 touchdowns during the stretch.

TE Will Mallory

Class: 2018

High school: Providence (Jacksonville)

Size: 6-5, 210 pounds

247Sports composite ranking: No. 8 tight end, No. 193 overall

Recruitment status: Committed to Miami on April 21

Will Mallory is all the way back. The 4-star tight end has been hampered by injuries all season and finally made his return last week with a 75-yard day. On Friday, the senior was back to being his fully dominant self.

Mallory caught 11 passes for 193 yards and 2 touchdowns during Providence School’s 40-39 overtime loss to Trinity Catholic High School of Ocala, Fla., in Jacksonville. Mallory’s big day was sparked by early success. He opened the game with a 60-yard touchdown on a screen pass and then added another 15-yard touchdown later during the first quarter. His 193 yards made up more than half of Providence’s passing yards.

Mallory has one game left of his high school career because the Stallions are going to miss the playoffs. He will finish his high school career Thursday against Jacksonville’s Atlantic Coast High School.

TE Brevin Jordan

Class: 2018

High school: Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas)

Size: 6-2, 200 pounds

247Sports composite ranking: No. 3 tight end, No. 66 overall

Recruitment status: Committed to Miami on April 16

Brevin Jordan kept his touchdown streak going Friday. The 4-star tight end has found the end zone in eight consecutive games, and this time he didn’t settle for 1 score.

Jordan caught 3 passes for 105 yards and 2 touchdowns during Bishop Gorman High School’s 55-0 win against Vegas’ Durango High School, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. He has 9 total touchdowns in nine games this season.

The senior, who also plays some outside linebacker, already has set career bests in every receiving category this season.

K Bubba Baxa

Class: 2018

High school: Pasadena (Texas) Memorial

Size: 6-foot, 185 pounds

247Sports composite ranking: No. 9 kicker, No. 1,749 overall

Recruitment status: Committed to Miami on May 27

Bubba Baxa is the rare high school kicker who can be trusted to hit from 50 yards. On Friday, the senior made his second 50-yarder of the season.

The 3-star kicker connected on a 50-yard field goal to snap a tie during the third quarter of Pasadena Memorial High School’s 30-24 road win against South Houston (Texas) High School. Baxa, who punts and kicks for Pasadena Memorial, also hit 5 extra points during the win.

The kick was still a few yards short of Baxa’s season long. The specialist booted a 54-yarder earlier in October.
