Miami’s Jacksonville area connection appeals to elite 2020 athlete Fred Davis

Fred Davis-Miami recruiting-Jacksonville

HOMESTEAD, Fla. — Miami has built up enough of a reputation in the Jacksonville metropolitan area to feel comfortable about signing any prospect it wants from the First Coast. The Hurricanes hold commitments from Marcus Crowley and Kingsley Eguakun in the Class of 2019. They landed Will Mallory in the Class of 2018. Now, Miami has a chance to add one of the top prospects in the Class of 2020 with Fred Davis.

Davis, considered a 4-star athlete in the latest rankings, sees the work tight ends coach Todd Hartley is doing on the First Coast, and it should help. He’s a teammate of Crowley’s at Trinity Christian Academy in Jacksonville and spent last Sunday playing with the 3-star running back for Pro Impact at the adidas East Coast Invitational in Homestead. It’s not a factor to ignore as Davis’ recruitment heats up.

“They’re bringing a lot of kids from Jacksonville, so that feels like home,” Davis told DieHards on Sunday at Harris Field Park. “That’s very important.”

While Davis didn’t get to campus this weekend, the rising junior went to Coral Gables, Fla., only a few weeks earlier. The 6-foot-1, 169-pound defensive back made his way to South Florida on Feb. 24 for the Hurricanes’ men’s basketball win against Virginia Tech. Davis never made it to Hard Rock Stadium during the fall — Miami didn’t offer until Dec. 6 — but he got a full look at the actual school last month.

“I loved it,” Davis said. “I really got to see the campus. The tour lasted for about six, seven hours. It was really all day.”

Davis spent time watching film with cornerbacks coach Mike Rumph, and exploring every nook and cranny of the campus, from the football facilities to academic buildings.

Davis has a few other schools he knows he wants to see this spring — Florida, Alabama and South Carolina, most notably — but the Hurricanes seem to be in excellent shape. With all the prospects from the Jacksonville area hoping to visit frequently, Davis expects he’ll be part of plenty of trips to the Miami metropolitan area during the coming months.

“I’m going to get back down,” Davis said, “a lot.”
