Miami depth chart for Georgia Tech has crowded RB group after injury

The Miami depth chart needed to undergo some significant alterations this week and unsurprisingly the two-deep at running back remains muddy as the No. 11 Hurricanes prepare for Saturday’s game against Georgia Tech.

A rash of injuries during Saturday’s 24-20 win against Florida State in left Miami with significant question marks on offense as the week began. The most serious blow was running back Mark Walton, who will miss the rest of the season due to an ankle injury. Replacing him in the starting lineup isn’t confusing – Travis Homer has been an excellent backup running back this year – but filling out the rest of the rotation is. The Hurricanes’ depth chart suggests they’ll mix four others in behind the sophomore for now. Trayone Gray, Crispian Atkins, freshman Robert Burns and DeeJay Dallas, who is listed as an “athlete” on Miami’s roster, are all listed as the co-backups on the depth chart released Tuesday.

Coach Mark Richt said Tuesday he envisions Gray, a junior, as the backup with Atkins, a walk-on, and Dallas sharing the No. 3 role. Burns is a freshman and the Hurricanes seem intent on saving the former Under Armour All-American’s redshirt.

The next most prominent injury was to wide receiver Ahmmon Richards, who missed the first two games of the regular season with a hamstring injury. The sophomore has been listed as the co-starter at X-receiver all season, which is still the case this week. Richards is listed with an “or” alongside Lawrence Cager. Darrell Langham is now the lone reserve at the X with Dayall Harris suspended.

Richards sat out practice Tuesday and Richt said the wideout is still dealing with the hamstring injury “may play.” Either way, expect to see an expanded role from Langham after his heroics in Tallahassee, Fla.

The last significant injury on offense was to Navaughn Donaldson, the freshman who has been an immediate standout as Miami’s starting right guard. The offensive lineman went down on the same play as Walton during the Hurricanes’ penultimate drive and missed Miami’s final possession. He also didn’t practice Tuesday and Richt called him “questionable.” He is still, however, listed as the Hurricanes’ lone starter at right guard. Jahair Jones is listed as the backup as he has been all season.

Miami also lost one starter on defense late during Saturday’s win. Starting safety Sheldrick Redwine went down during the third quarter while trying to tackle Seminoles running back Cam Akers and is described by Richt as “questionable.” The junior still listed as one of the starting safeties with Romeo Finley and Amari Carter as his co-backups. Richt also said Dee Delaney, a starting cornerback, is “questionable.” The senior is also still listed as a starter with Trajan Bandy and Jhavonte Dean backing him up.
