QB Matt Corral discusses Florida commitment, OC Doug Nussmeier

As Jim McElwain tries to rebuild Florida football into a championship program, one of his mottos is “recruit daily or die.” Join us here on SEC Country for a daily recap of the  latest Florida recruiting news, tales from the trail and perspective on what it all means for the Gators.

Latest on Matt Corral

Florida offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier is taking advantage of the bye week and visiting the Gators’ top-rated commitment.

Quarterback Matt Corral, a top-50 overall recruit from Long Beach, Calif,, will receive a visit from his future position coach on Friday.

Nussmeier is the primary recruiter for Corral and led the charge on his commitment to Florida back in the summer.

“Really it started with Coach Nuss,” Corral told. “The very first time I talked to him, he was asking why I de-committed from USC, how the process had been for me and just got to know me as a person. He starting asking about my family at random times. … It’s just those little things that mean a lot to me.”

The Gators are 3-3 heading into the Georgia game next Saturday and Florida’s offense has regressed since losing QB Luke Del Rio for the second straight season.

Nussmeier continues to catch heat for the lack of production, but Corral doesn’t have concerns about his offensive system.

“With his background and just the type offense he runs, I feel like I can transition pretty well from what I’m in now,” Corral said. “I’m going over college-like plays, I’m going over the film, I’m staying after practice. Just putting in more of the mental work rather than just the physical work.”

The 6-foot-2, 196-pound passer ranked the nation’s No. 3 pro-style quarterback and No. 32 overall prospect. Corral explained why he and other Florida commits aren’t second-guessing their decisions.

“It’s just getting the opportunity to play,” Corral said. “Coaches lay it all out for the players day in and day out. It’s up to the players to give back. If the players are doing it correctly, that’s the coach’s job. The coach is not going to let that happen and recruits see that.

“The coaches tell us what they do and show us what type of work they put in. I just know they’ll take care of you and they all know that we’re going to grow, not only as a football player but as a young man once we get there.”
