Maryland-Northwestern game preview

Maryland and Northwestern are in similar places in their respective conferences. The Wildcats have somewhat disappointed in the Big Ten West race so far, but have had a tough conference schedule, drawing Wisconsin and Penn State in their first two games. Still, an underwhelming Week 1 win over Nevada and a listless 41-17 loss to Duke don’t paint an excellent picture.

Maryland’s opening win over Texas was a surprisingly solid start to the season, but quarterback injuries have thrown the entire team for a loop. Sophomore Tyrrell Pigrome was Maryland’s starting quarterback to begin the season, but an ACL tear felled him in the third quarter of Week 1. Then freshman Kasim Hill suffered the same injury against UCF. It was a familiar refrain for a team that lost four quarterbacks and was relegated to starting a linebacker at quarterback in 2012. Then Max Bortenschlager went down with an undisclosed injury in last week’s loss to Ohio State. Caleb Henderson, a former 4-star recruit who transferred from North Carolina and sat out last season due to NCAA transfer rules, will end up starting if Bortenschlager can’t go against Northwestern.

Either way, Maryland’s going to need its running game to show up to win any game this season. There’s a common pattern in Maryland’s two losses. The Terps ran for 42 yards against UCF and 50 yards against Ohio State. That same stat against Texas, Towson and Minnesota: 263, 367 and 262 yards. While they can’t go 3-for-13 through the air like they did against Ohio State, its a strong running game that will get Maryland to victory against anyone. Ty Johnson, Lorenzo Harrison and Maryland’s other running backs have to run wild to get a win.

For Northwestern, this game is the first time the Wildcats play a team that is on their level. Wisconsin and Penn state are tough tasks for any Big Ten team that isn’t Ohio State or Michigan. Maryland and Northwestern are in the weird middle ground with Minnesota and Purdue in a league that has lacked a semblance of parity for years. Saturday’s game is a chance for fans to see two teams that actually deserve to be on the same playing field, so that’s exciting.
