Yahoo Sports dropped a bombshell of a report Friday morning, implicating several ACC programs in the FBI indictment into men’s college basketball. Among them were former Virginia Cavaliers guard Malcolm Brogdon.
Most programs and players have chosen to stay silent, at least in the first few hours following the release of the Yahoo Sports report, but Brogdon’s mother, Jann Adams, responded rather quickly.
In the Yahoo Sports report, Adams is listed as having dinner at the Ritz Carlton on March 14, 2016 with basketball agent Christian Dawkins. The alleged meal cost $64.16.
But Adams came forward Friday morning and said she doesn’t recalling meeting with Dawkins.
“I don’t remember having dinner with any agent,” Adams said according to The Daily Progress. “And I don’t honestly remember ever going to Ritz Carlton for dinner.”
That’s not exactly an outright denial, but she grew firmer in her response as her conversation continued with the Virginia newspaper.
“I don’t believe that I’ve ever done anything like that,” Adams said. “I have been very, very careful to ensure that Malcolm, nor I, nor his brothers ever did anything that was in violation of NCAA rules in respect to Malcolm and the program.
“I’ve been adamant that we’ve never been involved in anything like taking money from any program, any basketball program, any agent, none of that happened with Malcolm.”
Adams did admit that she will be reviewing her story to try and remember if she ever did meet with Dawkins. As of Friday morning, she doesn’t recall ever talking to that particular basketball agent.
Brogdon was the key figure of Virginia’s Elite Eight team two years ago. If not for blowing a second-half lead versus Syracuse in the regional final, the Cavaliers would have went to their first Final Four in over 30 years.
During the 2015-16, Brogdon won ACC Player of the Year and ACC Defensive Player of the Year. While playing for the Milwaukee Bucks last season, he won NBA Rookie of the Year.
