LSU spring football practice report: Tigers don full pads for first time

BATON ROUGE, La. — LSU got its first true taste of football this spring as the Tigers donned pads for the first time on Thursday during their third spring practice.

For the first time, we witnessed quarterbacks throwing the ball to someone other than themselves. Don’t get too excited, though — they were limited to swing passes to the fullbacks during the observation window.

Here is what we observed in the 15-minute window open to reporters.

LSU spring practice observations: March 15, 2010

  • Three notable players were not dressed out in the secondary: safety Grant Delpit and cornerbacks Kristian Fulton and Kary Vincent Jr. The news of Fulton’s NCAA-mandated suspension was a big story earlier this week, but he remains eligible to practice with the team and did so during LSU’s first two practices.
  • Three other players wore yellow non-contact jerseys, but participated in practice: tackle Austin Deculus, outside linebacker Michael Divinity and long snapper Blake Ferguson.
  • The Tigers appear to have a clear pecking order at outside linebacker. K’Lavon Chaisson and Ray Thornton are the first unit, backed up by Divinity and Andre Anthony, respectively. Junior college transfer Travez Moore is currently the lone No. 3 outside linebacker.
  • In the quarterback battle, it’s important to remember that reps will be juggled throughout the spring. That said, Myles Brennan warmed up with Nick Brossette as LSU’s No. 1 backfield tandem. Justin McMillan was the No. 2 quarterback with running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Lowell Narcisse paired along with Lanard Fournette as the No. 3 backfield.
  • We only saw a couple throws from each quarterback, so beware the peril of small sample size. Nevertheless, it was impossible to ignore the fact that Brennan’s first throw sailed a couple feet over fullback Tory Carter’s head on a 3-yard out pattern.
  • Narcisse’s first throw was on target, but he was encouraged to release the ball sooner by offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Steve Ensminger.
