BATON ROUGE, La. — The two most talented players on LSU’s roster were both absent when the Tigers resumed bowl practice Monday afternoon.
Running back Derrius Guice and outside linebacker Arden Key both missed practice Monday as the Tigers prepared for the Citrus Bowl versus Notre Dame. This was Guice’s first absence from bowl practice, while Key has missed practices and games over the last month since he injured his knee versus Arkansas and had surgery on his finger after the end of the regular season.
Guice has expressed interest in playing in the bowl game in the past and there hasn’t been any indication of him skipping the game as Leonard Fournette did a year ago. Because of his injuries, Key might be more of a risk to miss the Citrus Bowl, especially given his offseason shoulder surgery from the summer and his high draft stock.
Both Key and Guice are consensus projected first round picks for the 2018 NFL Draft.
Other LSU practice notes
- Key and Guice weren’t the only major contributors absent. Inside linebacker Donnie Alexander missed practice again, as he did last week. On top of this, starting cornerback Kevin Toliver II, starting outside linebacker Corey Thompson and fullback Tory Carter weren’t at the media viewing period of practice.
- Senior offensive tackle K.J. Malone was at practice, but working with the second string behind freshman Saahdiq Charles. Malone hasn’t played since LSU’s win over Florida, in which he injured his knee. Malone has been cleared for contact, but it’s no guarantee that he’ll earn back his starting position over Charles, who was named Freshman All-SEC for his performance in 2017.
- Monday was a walk-through practice, so it’s not too wise to read into contact and non-contact jerseys. That said, freshman quarterback Myles Brennan was the only QB in a white, full-contact jersey. All of the other passers, including starter Danny Etling and fellow freshman Lowell Narcisse, were in their customary gold, non-contact jerseys. Again, being that Monday was a walk-through and no one was wearing pads, everyone should be considered non-contact.
