LSU gymnastics: Sarah Finnegan scores two Perfect 10s, Tigers finish undefeated at PMAC for 5th straight year

BATON ROUGE, La. — The LSU gymnastics team may have honored its seniors on Saturday, but a junior stole the show.

Behind two Perfect 10s from junior Sarah Finnegan, the No. 2 LSU gymnastics team defeated Arizona 198.125-195.525, finishing off the squad’s fifth-straight undefeated season at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. LSU’s high score came with a pair of school records, as the team posted a 49.750 on bars and a 49.725 on beam. The Tigers’ bars score wasn’t just a school record, but also the best score any team has posted in 2018.

“That’s a great way to end a fabulous regular season,” LSU gymnastics coach D-D Breaux said. “We’re just extremely excited about the crowd and the enthusiasm that was in the arena today. This team is truly a team with a lot of heart and pride in the traditions that they have established and the traditions that are held here at LSU for all our sports. The things that this team has achieved and this senior class has achieved is second to none.”

Finnegan had one of the best days imaginable, posting Perfect 10s on bars and beam on the way to an all-around score of 39.700.  With her two 10.0 scores Saturday and her 10.0 floor score from two weeks ago, Finnegan becomes the second gymnast in LSU history to score Perfect 10s in three events for a career, joining school legend April Burkholder.

“It was cool,” Finnegan said about her day. “I thought we did really well both on bars and beam. I guess it was a school record. That’s awesome. But finishing up on those two events, I was really proud of my teammates how they just hit one after the other and they built on that. I was just really happy I was able to finish strong on those events.”

Finnegan came into the meet Saturday ranked as the No. 1 bars worker and No. 5 beam worker in the nation by regional qualifying score. She was also ranked No. 4 nationally in the all-around.

Not to be outdone, sophomore Kennedi Edney also posted a 39.700 in the all-around, scoring a 9.90 on vault, 9.925 on bars, 9.90 on beam and a 9.975 on floor. Edney tied with senior Myia Hambrick for the team-high score on vault and earned sole possession of the meet crown on floor.

Competing in the PMAC for the last time, Hambrick score a 9.90 on vault, a 9.925 on bars, a 9.95 on beam and a 9.575 on floor after slipping out of bounds. Hambrick is ranked as the nation’s No. 1 floor performer and No. 5 all-arounder in 2018.

Senior spotlight

Prior to the start of the meet on Saturday, LSU honored seniors Hambrick, Erin Macadaeg and Lauren Li for their four years of competition. Hambrick received the warmest ovation, which is fitting based off her 12-time All-America and 3-time All-SEC status.

“We talked about before coming in here and today that it was just another meet to build our confidence for next week and the rest of the postseason,” Hambrick said. “So that’s what I expected today to be about and that’s what it was about.”
