LSU football podcast: Great programs overcome losses like Jeff Grimes and Austin Thomas

LSU football is the No. 1 topic of discussion every day on SEC Country’s  One Team, One Podcast. Host  Carter ‘The Power” Bryant reacts to the news that offensive line coach Jeff Grimes is leaving to become the offensive coordinator at BYU and general manager Austin Thomas is joining Tennessee in a similar role. Also, SEC Country LSU beat writer Nick Suss hops on to give his thoughts on the draft-eligible Tigers, if Derrius Guice should sit out the Citrus Bowl and why Jeremy Pruitt once embarrassingly chewed Suss out in front of his peers.

Jeff Grimes and Austin Thomas bolts to BYU and Tennessee respectively

Grimes was a great offensive line coach at LSU since joining the program in 2014. Sure, the group turned in some lackluster performances. Yet his rushing attacks often ranked amongst the best in the SEC and he developed stars like Ethan Pocic, Will Clapp and Toby Weathersby. The Tigers have already found a replacement in Los Angeles Chargers assistant offensive line coach James Cregg.
Former LSU standout Austin Thomas was the first ever LSU general manager. Thomas was a major factor in recruiting and day-to-day operations behind the scenes. He was instrumental in bringing in Jacob Phillips, JaCoby Stevens and John Battle. There is no word yet on how his role will be filled.
Bryant believes both Grimes and Thomas were two of the stronger staff members for LSU. However, great programs overcome assistant coaches leaving. This will be a massive test for Ed Orgeron’s coaching prowess.

NFL Draft Evaluation

Suss believes Guice and Arden Key are defenitely leaving the program early for the NFL. Will others players like Donte Jackson, Will Clapp, Garrett Brumfield and Kevin Toliver do the same? Sussy Suss gives us an idea of what will be in their near future.

Angry Jeremy Pruitt?

Suss recalls a rough run-in with a younger Pruitt at practice. Also, a fact of the day would make you think if lightning is sexist.
