LSU football announces who will wear No. 7 jersey in 2018

BATON ROUGE, La. — From Tyrann Mathieu and Patrick Peterson to Leonard Fournette and DJ Chark, No. 7 is the jersey number given to LSU’s best playmaker. And in 2018, that playmaker will make his LSU debut.

The school announced that wide receiver Jonathan Giles will where No. 7 in 2018. A junior transfer from Texas Tech, Giles sat out in 2017 after recording 1,158 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns for the Red Raiders in 2016. Giles is expected to start at wide receiver for LSU in 2018, playing alongside 5-star wide receiver signee Terrace Marshall Jr., 4-star signee Ja’Marr Chase and returning receivers Stephen Sullivan, Drake Davis, Dee Anderson, Derrick Dillon and Justin Jefferson.

Giles takes over No. 7 from Chark, who led LSU with 874 yards and 3 touchdowns in 2017. Fournette wore the jersey before Chark, holding the uniform for three years between 2014-16. No one wore No. 7 in the two years before Fournette, as the number lied dormant after Tyrann Mathieu was dismissed from the program. Mathieu wore the jersey for one year following in the footsteps of All-America and Thorpe Award winning cornerback Patrick Peterson who wore the jersey for three seasons.

No. 7 isn’t the only jersey number that holds deeper value at LSU. The Tigers will also have to find a replacement to wear No. 18, the jersey given to the veteran who exemplifies the best leadership qualities on the team. In 2017, LSU split No. 18 duties for the first time, giving the uniform to defensive end Christian LaCouture and fullback J.D. Moore. No indication has been given about who will succeed LaCouture and Moore or whether the traditional number will revert to one owner or two.

LSU returns to the gridiron for the first day of spring practice on Sunday March 11. Be sure to stay posted to SEC Country between now and then as we break down what to expect from the Tigers this spring.
