Offensive line Jeff Grimes is a second key member of the LSU coaching staff on his way out of town.
Grimes, following his fourth season with the Tigers, is expected to take the offensive coordinator position with BYU, a source confirmed to SEC Country’s Alex Hickey.
Grimes is expected to accept the position on Thursday, but remain with LSU through their bowl game on Jan. 1, according to Football Scoop. He will replace Ty Detmer as BYU’s offensive play-caller.
Grimes worked at BYU from 2004-06 as the Cougars’ offensive line coach. In 2006, his group of offensive linemen helped BYU capture a Mountain West Conference championship with an 11-2 record.
Grimes joined Les Miles’ coaching staff back in 2014. He was the team’s offensive line coach and running game coordinator, helping to groom future NFL players such as La’el Collins, who earned the Jacobs Blocking Trophy in his inaugural season in Baton Rouge. Grimes also coached Ethan Pocic, one of seven players to win All-SEC honors and three All-Americans.
Credit Grimes for helping LSU to assemble LSU’s current offensive line, including Garrett Brumfield, Will Clapp, Ed Ingram, Toby Weathersby, Saahdiq Charles, Jakori Savage, Austin Deculus, Donavaughn Campbell and Lloyd Cushenberry III. He is also responsible for securing commitments from four 2018 prospects, including the nation’s top junior college tackle Badara Traore, Cameron Wire, the Louisiana’s top offensive lineman, as well as Under Armour All-American center Cole Smith and junior college guard Damien Lewis.
Given the rash of in-home visits over the past two and a double-digit haul of official visitors heading to campus this weekend, days before the early signing period gets underway on Dec. 20-22, this should not cause much attrition within the Tigers’ 2018 recruiting class.
