LSU-Auburn game preview

The 2017 Tiger Bowl is a perfect time to wonder what could’ve been.

When the two teams matched up in 2016, the shape of SEC football was set to change regardless of the outcome. Auburn was 1-2, coming off close losses to Clemson and Texas A&M, and coach Gus Malzahn was on the hot seat. LSU was 2-1, coach Les Miles was also on the hot seat and had already changed starting quarterbacks and barely eked past Mississippi State by three points.

In a game where Auburn didn’t score a touchdown, the Orange Tigers bested the Purple Tigers 18-13, but not without a little last-minute controversy. LSU quarterback Danny Etling appeared to throw a game winning touchdown as time expired, but upon review the referees reversed the call, saying LSU didn’t get the snap off in time.

The rest was history. The win steadied Auburn’s season, Malzahn kept his job and led his team to the Sugar Bowl. Miles was fired the next day and the Ed Orgeron era began in Baton Rouge.

There aren’t as many big picture issues at stake this Saturday, but LSU and Auburn still have a lot to lose. Auburn is on a hot streak, averaging 48 points per game over its last three wins and crossing into the AP Top 10 for the first time this season. The home team, on the other hand, found a semblance of normalcy by beating Florida and is trying to put its early season hiccups behind it to even off the first half of Orgeron’s first full season.
