Among the many daunting tasks facing Louisville interim basketball coach David Padgett during incredibly hard times for the Cardinals athletic program, what he faces on the recruiting trail might be among the most challenging.
Padgett fell forward into one of the biggest jobs in the country when an FBI probe alleging recruiting impropriety rocked Louisville and led to the ouster of Rick Pitino and athletic director Tom Jurich. With that cloud still casting an enormous shadow over the entire program, Padgett still has to go out and find players and he knows it will be a struggle.
“From a recruiting standpoint, there are so many things that could or could not impact a recruit,” Padgett said according to Tim Sullivan of the Louisville Courier Journal . “The situations are so different, but the biggest thing is who’s going to be the head coach. We can’t answer that. Everyone understands the situation when we talk to recruits and so on and so forth.
“They get it. It’s just about us selling the brand, trying to lay the groundwork of Louisville basketball and what it will be moving forward.”
Of course, without any certainty about who will be the next coach and what they will face when they arrive, it becomes next to impossible to sell the program to a recruit. Padgett can continue to keep things held together on the court (Louisville is 6-2), but ultimately the program is rudderless in the choppiest of seas and the entire basketball world is keenly aware of that fact and it doesn’t look like that’s changing anytime soon.
