Iowa State football is ranked for the first time since 2005, putting the Cyclones back on the map in the college football landscape. Literally.
Reddit user “nbingham196” has mapped the closest AP Top 25 team to every US county each week during the 2017 season. This week, Iowa State leads the way in the Big 12.
Only Washington State had a larger territory than Iowa State — not including Washington carrying the entire state of Alaska.
It’s a sight that Iowa State fans likely didn’t expect to see at the beginning of the season, especially with Kansas State beginning the season in the top 25. But with the Wildcats since dropping out and the Cyclones finding their way in, Iowa State dominates a major chunk of the Midwest.
Iowa State can climb even further up the rankings if they defeat No. 4 TCU on Saturday. The Cyclones haven’t beaten the Horned Frogs since 2012.
