It’s been a rough week for the Louisville basketball program.
On Wednesday, it was hammered on the road by No. 5 Duke. It was an ugly cap to a day during which it was stripped by the NCAA of its 2013 national championship and forced to vacate 123 wins — its punishment for a sex escort scandal.
Several former and current members of the Cardinals basketball program, including disgraced coach Rick Pitino, immediately railed against the decision. Utah Jazz rookie Donovan Mitchell, who played under Pitino for two seasons, not only tweeted his dissent on Wednesday, but vowed to make a statement with his footwear during the Jazz’ next game.
That vow came to pass on Friday. With the Portland Trail Blazers in town on Friday night, Mitchell broke out a pair of custom sneakers during the pregame warmup:

Look closer and you’ll see the last names of the members of that 2013 team, including Russ Smith, Peyton Siva, Luke Hancock and Gorgui Dieng.
Even though Mitchell was still a high schooler in 2013, it’s clear that he stands in solidarity with his fellow Cardinals alumni.
