LaVar Ball, Patrick Beverley get in war of words after former Razorback shuts down Lonzo Ball

Former Arkansas guard Patrick Beverley has earned a reputation as one of the peskiest defenders in the NBA. Rookie Lonzo Ball, the Lakers’ prized No. 2 overall draft pick, learned that first hand in his NBA debut.

Before the whistle. After the whistle. And even after the game.

Here’s what Beverley, named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team last season, had to say after totally shutting down Ball and holding him to just 3 points on 1-for-6 shooting with 4 assists and 2 turnovers.

Beverley mentioned that he told Ball that his father, LaVar, would be a big source of inspiration for his opponents who would be “coming at him” this season. LaVar certainly seemed to motivate Beverley, who said he “had to welcome his young a– to the NBA.”

Beverley was traded to the Clippers this offseason and is now a part of the in-state rivalry with the Lakers.

On Thursday night, his mission was to spoil the much-hyped point guard’s debut in what was technically a home game for the Lakers. He was on Ball like white on rice for much of the game, bumping and checking him the whole way.

After the game, LaVar responded to Beverley’s comments.

“Yeah, you shut the m—–f—– down,” LaVar told ESPN. “And your check still ain’t going to go no higher than what it is. Yeah, you shut him down. OK … Who is Patrick Beverley? He played all last year and nobody said nothing about him. Now we are looking at your first game. Why? Because Lonzo’s name is attached to it.

“So you got to be [all hard],” he added. “Let’s see what you do the next five games, if you are going to be pumped up towards everybody like that and go back to your 0-for-5 shooting and your two or three rebounds. Nobody is going to care about you. But you put my son’s name in it and you put my name in it, now you got some action and you got some people talking.”

The Lakers and Clippers will meet three more times this season, including a Nov. 27 contest in which the Clippers will have their colors showing at the Staples Center.
