Kirk Herbstreit: Penn State RB Saquon Barkley can win Heisman at Ohio State

Kirk Herbstreit thinks the Heisman race could be finished this weekend — and October isn’t even done yet.

ESPN’s analyst said Penn State RB Saquon Barkley can clinch the Heisman if he has a good performance and if the Nittany Lions beat Ohio State on Saturday.

“Does Barkley win the Heisman in October with a good performance [and] win at Columbus?!??” a Twitter user asked.

“Yes,” Herbstreit replied.

If Barkley wins, he would be Penn State’s second Heisman winner. John Cappelletti won the Heisman in 1973 after rushing for 1,522 yards and 17 touchdowns.

On the other side, when asked if J.T. Barrett would get back into the Heisman race with a great game and a win, Herbstreit said he believed that would be the case. But he stressed the need for a great performance.

Herbstreit had a clear view of Barkley’s abilities during the Nittany Lions’ 42-13 win against Michigan. In No. 2 Penn State’s win, the Nittany Lions piled up more than 500 offensive yards.

Barkley had another huge game in the rout. He had 108 rushing yards with 2 scores and 53 receiving yards and a touchdown, including a wild play where he bobbled the football.

Though Stanford RB Bryce Love and Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield could be tough competition, Barkley is the clear Heisman favorite. If Barkley plays well in another Penn State win this Saturday, he would have a clear path to the trophy.

After Ohio State, Penn State plays at Michigan State, vs. Rutgers, vs. Nebraska and at Maryland. A potential rematch with Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship Game could also be ahead.

Saquon Barkley statistics

  • Rushing: 117 carries, 757 yards, 6.5 yards per attempt, 8 TDs
  • Receiving: 32 catches, 448 yards, 3 TDs
  • Returning: 9 kick returns, 273 yards, 30.3 yards per attempt, TD
  • Passing: 1-for-1 for 16 yards, TD

Herbstreit and College GameDay were at this last week’s Penn State home game against Michigan. GameDay will be following Penn State to Columbus, Ohio, for the Nittany Lions-Buckeyes game.

Penn State and Ohio State play at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Oct. 28.
