Kentucky football: What is Wildcats’ scholarship situation after National Signing Day?

We tackle the best question asked by Kentucky fans every day. If you’d like to submit a question, tweet to Kyle Tucker  here and Joe Mussatto  here. Then look for the Kentucky Question of the Day.

Four players signed with Kentucky on National Signing Day last Wednesday, giving the Wildcats a 24-man class in 2018.

But there have also been some departures this offseason: quarterback Drew Barker, linebacker Eli Brown, running back Bryant Koback and wide receiver JaVonte Richardson among them.

So where does Kentucky stand with the NCAA limit of 85 scholarships? That’s our question of the day.

Here’s the breakdown:

Seniors (16): OLB Josh Allen, OL George Asafo-Adjei, CB Derrick Baity, WR Dorian Baker, TE C.J. Conrad, DE Kengera Daniel, DT Tymere Dubose, S Mike Edwards, CB Lonnie Johnson, LB Jordan Jones, RB Sihiem King, DT Adrian Middleton, OG Bunchy Stallings, OLB Denzil Ware, S Darius West and CB Chris Westry

Juniors (13): DE T.J. Carter, LB Kash Daniel, DB Jordan Griffin, DL Phil Hoskins, WR Tavin Richardson, TE Justin Rigg, RB Benny Snell, OG Logan Stenberg, DL Calvin Taylor, S Marcus Walker, CB Domonique Williams, OT Mason Wolfe and OT Landon Young

Price, DB Davonte Robinson, RB A.J. Rose, WR Clevan Thomas, LB Boogie Watson and QB Terry Wilson

Redshirt freshmen (13): DL Abule Abadi-Fitzgerald, DB Tyrell Ajian, QB Danny Clark, DB Yusuf Corker, LB Jamin Davis, OT Sebastien Dolcine, OT Austin Dotson, OLB Alex King, DB Michael Nesbitt, OT Naasir Watkins, DL Chris Whittaker, QB Walker Wood and OLB Jordan Wright

True freshmen (21): WR Marvin Alexander, TE Brenden Bates, DB Jamari Brown, WR Allen Dailey, CB Stanley Garner, DL Davoan Hawkins, WR Akeem Hayes, OL Kenneth Horsey, OL Darian Kinnard, OT Nick Lewis, DL Jerquavion Mahone, DL Marquan McCall, LB Chris Oats, WR Bryce Oliver, LB Ashtan Pierre, K Chance Poore, RB Chris Rodriguez, RB Kavosiey Smoke, LB DeAndre Square, TE Keaton Upshaw and C Quintin Wilson

Factoring the recent additions and departures, Kentucky has 84 scholarship players — one below the limit.

That number could obviously change between now and when the season kicks off Sept. 1.
