Kentucky football: Josh Allen and Mike Edwards discuss NFL Draft possibilities

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky junior outside linebacker Josh Allen and junior strong safety Mike Edwards confirmed on Saturday their interest in potentially declaring for the NFL Draft after this season.

Allen and Edwards are two of Kentucky’s top defenders. Allen had 59 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks this season. He had one interception and forced a pair of fumbles. Edwards led the Wildcats with four interceptions. He had 89 tackles and four tackles for loss.

Kentucky’s Music City Bowl matchup against Northwestern on December 29 could be the last college game for both defenders. Mark Stoops said Tuesday that he submitted names to the NFL for draft feedback. Edwards and Allen confirmed that they were among the names.

“Worried about the bowl game right now, but you know, if that time comes and I’m lucky for me to go as a high draft pick, then that’s what I would do,” Edwards said.

Defensive backs coach Steve Clinkscale said he hasn’t addressed NFL talk with Edwards.

Allen, a New Jersey native, went from a 2-star prospect out of high school to a possible early round pick.

“I knew I was capable of better,” he said. “That’s just why I had to push myself and work my way up. I feel like I’m doing that. It got me to where I am now.”

Allen said he’s already talked to his family about the possibility of forgoing his senior season.

“Yeah of course I have, but I ain’t declared nothing or decided what I’m gonna do,” Allen said. “I’m just taking my time, wait till after the bowl game. Sit down with my family and go over everything that’s happening and go from there.”

He said he’s going to talk with his mom and girlfriend about his final decision.

“I still have to keep my family part of everything I do,” Allen said. “Family’s a big thing with me. Whatever I do, they do too.”
