LEXINGTON, Ky. — Big Blue Madness is more about the lasers and lights, Drake and recruits. The Blue-White scrimmage serves as a much better sneak peek at the 2017-18 Kentucky basketball team.
SEC Country is on the scene at Rupp Arena and we’ll provide live updates throughout the night as the Wildcats play some actual basketball in front of a crowd for the first time. Stay here and refresh often.
FINAL BOX SCORE: Remember, do some math on this as guys played for both sides.
Threes Company: The 6-9 Gabriel is now 2 of 2 from deep and Kentucky players have made 11 total 3-pointers tonight, so that doesn’t seem like it’ll be a huge deficiency for the Cats. Gabriel is up to 19 points in 32 minutes. Other than some ugly turnovers, a strong performance by the sophomore.
Block Party: Nick Richards, the 7-foot freshman with a 7-5 wingspan, is far more advanced defensively than offensively at this point (which we’ve heard all along), but he’s going to be really good at protecting the paint. He’s up to 6 points, 7 rebounds and 7 blocked shots — including some ooooohhhh-and-ahhhhhhhhh swats — in 25 minutes. Both Knox and Washington have 21 points.

Quade Green Show: Think Green heard all the talk this week about Shai Gilgeous-Alexander challenging him for the starting point guard spot? Green just hit his fourth 3-pointer and has 18 points, 7 assists and 4 rebounds just four minutes into the second half. PJ Washington is also doing ridiculous things, including a rebound, behind-the-back dribble, coast to coast for a finish over SKJ’s long, outstretched arm. Washington is up to 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting. Pretty solid.
HALFTIME BOX SCORE: Note you’ll need to do math on some guys who’ve played for both sides. Kevin Knox swished a long baseline jumper to head to halftime with 18 points and 6 rebounds on 8-of-10 shooting. He’s really good. Quade Green also on triple-double alert: 13 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds at the break.
Blue 46, White 43: That score means nothing, because players are switching back and forth between teams now. But freshman forward Kevin Knox has been very impressive in the first half: 15 points (7 of 9 FG), 5 rebounds in 16 minutes, including a swished 3-pointer. As for UK’s outside shooting concern, the two teams are a combined 7 of 14 from 3-point range. Quade Green and Brad Calipari have both sunk a pair. PJ Washington is another impressive performer tonight as the 6-foot-7 power forward has his mid-range jumper dropping. He has 13 and 3 in 16 minutes.

Injury alert: Doesn’t appear serious, but Wenyen Gabriel got whacked in the head on a drive to the basket and dropped some blood on the court. Calipari, unfazed, is yelling at Gabriel on the bench for an out-of-control drive anyway.

What foul trouble? Kevin Knox needed less than nine minutes to commit four fouls. But there are no foul-outs in this scrimmage, so who cares?
Blue 20, White 14, 12:00 1H: Green buried a three in the coach’s son’s face, Gabriel scored again inside — he’s 4 of 4 from the field with a scrimmage-high 9 points but also 3 early turnovers — and Washington finished a strong take to the rack over Killeya-Jones before delivering the highlight of the night: a Diallo lob off glass that Washington crammed home. Diallo followed that with a nice baseline drive and finish in traffic … but he looks really winded already, sweating profusely and grabbing at his shorts during stoppages. Something to monitor.
Early highlights: The 6-9 Knox swished a long jumper, Diallo got a breakaway tomahawk dunk to delight the crowd, Green threw a pretty lob to Richards for a big slam and Gabriel finished a strong drive and baby hook with a swish.
STARTERS: The Blue team has the most guys who are likely actual UK starters: Quade Green, Hamidou Diallo, Kevin Knox, P.J. Washington and Nick Richards. That could certainly be a nice starting five for the Cats this season. The White team started Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Brad Calipari, Wenyen Gabriel, Sacha Killeya-Jones and Tai Wynyard.
That’s good news for Wynyard, who has been out with a back injury. Freshmen Jarred Vanderbilt (foot) and Jemarl Baker (knee) are out tonight.
