Kansas State men’s basketball is favored to defeat the Cinderella of the 2018 NCAA Tournament, but perhaps not by as much as some may expect.
OddsShark.com had the Wildcats listed as 10-point favorites for the team’s Sunday matchup vs. 16-seed University of Maryland-Baltimore County in the round of 32, set to be played in Charlotte, N.C.
UMBC became the first 16-seed in tournament history on Friday to ever defeat a 1-seed, knocking off the top-seeded Virginia Cavaliers in a stunning 74-54 win.
Kansas State coach Bruce Weber said he has told his team to not underestimate UMBC, even if the matchup does not appear to be much of a challenge on paper. The Wildcats could be without leading-scorer Dean Wade, who has been battling a re-aggravated foot injury from earlier in the year. Wade has sat out the team’s last two games.
Weber said it is possible Wade could receiver limited playing time on Sunday. Whether he plays or not, that won’t change the fact that the Wildcats will go up against a team riding an emotional high, with even the most casual college basketball fans out there cheering on the Retrievers after making history in round one.
Kansas State and UMBC are set for tip-off on Sunday at 6:45 p.m. CT. The winner will advance to the Sweet 16 next week in Atlanta, Ga.
