Johnny Manziel on Baker Mayfield comparisons: ‘He’s not me, and I’m not him’

Johnny Manziel isn’t buying into the comparisons some have made between him and former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Speaking on Barstool Sports’ Pardon My Take podcast, the former Texas A&M quarterback touched on the parallels some observers have drawn between him and the most recent Heisman Trophy winner. Like Manziel, Mayfield is known to be fiery on the field, with the former Sooners signal caller arguably crossing the line at times. The Texas natives are friends, Manziel said on the podcast, and they both rose as premier talents during their respective college football careers.

However, Manziel considers himself different than Mayfield in many ways.

As relayed by the Akron Beacon Journal’s Nate Ulrich, Manziel said on the podcast “he’s not me, and I’m not him,” when referring to Mayfield. Manziel also said “the way my wires are in my head … is completely different than Baker.”

Check out the full thought below:

“Me and Baker, I feel like have a really cool friendship, and I feel like he’s handling [the comparisons] the exact right way,” Manziel said on the podcast. “He’s like, ‘Listen,’ and I’ll say the same thing: We’re completely different people. We have a similar background. We’re both from Texas. We both played Texas high school football, but he’s not me, and I’m not him. The way my wires are in my head and the way that I’m built and my makeup is completely different than Baker.”

That’s a strong perspective from Manziel, who recently opened up during an interview with Good Morning America about his off-field struggle with alcohol and his bipolar diagnosis. He’s hoping for another NFL chance, after falling out of the league following a brief stint with the Cleveland Browns during the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

It’s easy to make the comparisons between Manziel and Mayfield. But Manziel is right: the two are completely different people. Likely, parallels between Manziel and Mayfield will continue to be drawn in lazy ways.

But Mayfield deserves the chance to blaze his own path at the next level.
