Miami Hurricanes men’s basketball coach Jim Larranaga always has some good things to say, but the best comment he made Tuesday had nothing to do with his own team.
Matt Porter of The Palm Beach Post asked Larranaga on what he thinks about LiAngelo and LaMelo Ball playing in Lithuania. The Hurricanes coach didn’t mince words when he answered.
“I think they’ll be back (in the United States) before the end of the year.”

That’s quite a statement, but it’s not quite as bad as it might sound. LiAngelo and LeMelo are scheduled to land in Lithuania on Jan. 4 and play their first Baltic league on Jan. 9, so the Hurricanes coach isn’t saying they will be back in the United States in the next three weeks.
But still, his comments should ring poignantly. The Ball kids could struggle to play at that level, and then throw in the culture shock they will undoubtedly experience, and this move is not exactly a slam dunk.
Then again, it’s the Ball family, so maybe making as many headlines as possible is really the only goal.
