Iowa State quarterback Kyle Kempt awarded another year of eligibility

Iowa State quarterback Kyle Kempt was awarded a sixth season of eligibility by the NCAA, the university announced Friday.

Kempt, who was expected to receive news on the ruling this weekend, will be listed as a senior in 2018 after helping the Cyclones to a breakout year in 2017.

“We are excited that Kyle was given another year of eligibility by the NCAA,” Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said in a news release. “We alerted Kyle and our recruits when we received the clearance notification on Jan. 30.

“Since then all of our efforts had been focused on our 2018 football team and recruiting. Kyle has established himself as a leader on our team and we are thrilled by the NCAA’s decision to allow him to remain a Cyclone in 2018.”

Kempt began his college career at Oregon State in 2013. He redshirted his first season, played on the scout team in 2014 and then transferred to a junior college in 2015 after a coaching change at Oregon State.

He then went to Iowa State as a walk-on and played in two games in 2016.

Kempt did not begin 2017 as Iowa State’s starting quarterback, but he earned his starting role against No. 3 Oklahoma and led the Cyclones to a 38-31 road win over the Sooners, throwing for 343 yards and 3 touchdowns.

He finished the season with 1,787 yards passing, 15 touchdowns, 3 interceptions and a 66-percent completion percentage. He also helped Iowa State knock off then-undefeated and fourth-ranked TCU to achieve bowl eligibility.

Kempt ended his impressive season with a superb performance — 314 yards passing, 2 touchdowns — in a 21-20 win over Memphis in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.

Campbell, who was optimistic throughout the process that Kempt would return, tweeted a video welcoming Kempt back for 2018.
