While Iowa State’s starting quarterback Jacob Park remained in Ames, Iowa for the Cyclones Saturday showdown with No. 3 Oklahoma, an unsung hero emerged.
Kyle Kempt, a fifth-year walk-on gunslinger, hadn’t actually slung a pass all season long, but he threw — and completed — plenty against the Sooners, guiding Iowa State to a shocking 38-31 upset victory on the road.
After stepping in for the absent Park, who didn’t travel with the team due to personal medical reasons, Kempt had a career day, completing 18 of 24 passes for 343 yards and 3 touchdowns en route to a tremendous 96.8 QBR. As a result, Kempt was ranked a ESPN’s No. 2 quarterback in college football throughout Week 6, trailing only Arizona’s Khalil Tate.
“While most of his passes were short, he had success throwing deep, going 4-for-5 for 130 yards on throws at least 10 yards downfield, including the game-winning touchdown to Allen Lazard with 2:19 left. In the first four games this season, the Cyclones had only completed 46 percent of such passes. Kempt completed 10 of 12 passes for 229 yards to the right side of the field; the Sooners had allowed a Big 12-low 204 yards in that direction this season.”
Such a showing from Kempt has led to plenty of praise throughout the past few days. Kempt earned his first weekly honor as the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, as well as being named the DieHards Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week.
More notably, though, Iowa State coach Matt Campbell raved about the quarterback that may very well be the Cyclones top option going forward.
“He was phenomenal,” Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said, via USA Today. “I’m really proud of him. He’s exactly what you want in your quarterback. Even when he wasn’t a starter, he’s a kid that prepared diligently like he was the starter.”
Whether or not Kempt is ultimately named the starter for Saturday’s showdown with the Kansas Jayhawks remains to be seen, but he’s certainly proven his worth during his lone appearance this season.
