The Hawkeyes desperately need a win. They have dropped four straight and six of the last seven. Southern couldn’t appear on the schedule at a better time.
The Jaguars entered the weekend ranked No. 331 nationally, according to KenPom. A victory over them won’t impress many folks, but Iowa isn’t in need of a statement game.
A win is what’s important.
That, and showing progress after rough two-week stretch. Iowa seeks good news.
The first came on Thursday. Forward Cordell Pemsl, who hit a chair, and Iowa State fans, trying for a loose ball on Thursday night, only suffered a laceration on his right shin. He is questionable for the game. The Hawkeyes feared he broke his leg when the injury happened.
Any additional improvement will pop up on the court. Iowa’s struggles are primarily tied into turnovers and defense.
The Hawkeyes committed 18 turnovers, leading to 28 Iowa State points, in an 84-78 loss on Thursday. This is a season-long trend in losses and is why it’s arguably the team’s most important issue to solve.
“Some of it is a little bit of lack of focus,” said Iowa forward Nicholas Baer on Thursday. “Obviously, we want to try to get the ball to our scorers, but I think another thing is people are pressuring us and we have to be strong with the ball and have to continue to make good decisions.”
At various times this season, on ball, perimeter, transition and 3-point defense became major issues. If the Hawkeyes are to show improvement on defense, they’ll need to forward Jared Sam in check. He leads Southern with 16.6 points per game scoring average.
Iowa did play better basketball at Iowa State. It wasn’t enough for a win. For a team struggling to get on track, a win matters. One is likely to be on tap Sunday evening.
