What defensive redshirt players are worth monitoring in spring football?
Land of 10 broke down offensive players coming off a redshirt to keep an eye on earlier this week. Now, the defense is up.
Here are four players coming off a redshirt to pay attention to during spring practice. They could play their way into the depth chart by the regular season.
DB Josh Turner
Josh Turner impressed coaches during fall camp and was under consideration to play last season. In the end, he redshirted. Turner is everything Iowa likes in a corner. At 6-foot, he possesses the size and length Iowa wants in a cornerback. He’s athletic, physical and a ballhawk, breaking up 17 passes as a high school senior in Florida. Playing time is available at corner back if Turner continues his quick adjustment to the college game.
LB Djimon Colbert
Djimon Colbert arrived on campus as a defensive back, but he is outgrowing the position. At 6-1, 215, Colbert projects as a potential ideal weakside linebacker, athletic enough to play in space and physical enough to help in the running game. All three linebacker positions are wide open. Anyone can claim a spot on the depth chart, even a redshirt.
DB Trey Creamer
Trey Creamer is a lot like Turner. He brings a lot to the table that Iowa seeks in a defensive back. The question is if he can climb over enough players on the depth chart to earn playing time. Even with playing time there for the taking, the defensive backfield is one of the deepest positions on the roster. It will be fun to watch the position battles for the next several months, though.
LB Nate Wieland
Any linebacker is capable of earning playing time this season. It’s a byproduct of so many experienced starters leaving the team. Nate Wieland, a former high school quarterback, he grasps the defense and is athletic enough to thrive in the Big Ten.
