Iowa-Ohio State series history
Big Ten expansion and realignment altered the Iowa-Ohio State series’ regularity perhaps more than any other in the league. Before Nebraska joined the Big Ten in 2011, the Hawkeyes and Buckeyes were scheduled to play six times over an 8-year period. They engaged in a pair of epic games in 2009 and 2010, and the Buckeyes won both. In 2009, the teams battled in a winner-take-all game for the Big Ten title and a Rose Bowl berth. Ohio State pulled out a 27-24 overtime victory. Both teams advanced to major bowls that season. Ohio State beat Oregon in the Rose Bowl, while Iowa stopped Georgia Tech in the Orange.
In 2010, the Hawkeyes led Ohio State 17-13 in the final 2 minutes and the Buckeyes faced fourth-and-10 at midfield. Quarterback Terrelle Pryor scrambled from one side to the other to pick up the first down. Ohio State scored the game-winning touchdown a few plays later in a 20-17 victory.
But since that game, the teams have played just once. In 2013, Ohio State scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to pull out a 34-24 win at Ohio Stadium. From 2011 through 2013, the teams were placed in opposite divisions when the Big Ten was split competitively. From 2014 onward, they’ve competed in the East and West divisions.
Before divisional play, the most unfortunate non-meeting came in 2002. Both teams finished the Big Ten season with 8-0 records and there was no championship game. No. 2-ranked Ohio State was undefeated overall and beat Miami in the Fiesta Bowl to win the national title. No. 3 Iowa, which had one non-conference loss, played in the Orange Bowl and lost to USC and Heisman Trophy winner Carson Palmer.
Ohio State leads the all-time series 47-14-3. The Hawkeyes’ last win was in 2004, a 33-7 victory at Kinnick Stadium. The Buckeyes have won five straight against Iowa.
