Iowa linebacker Josey Jewell returns to depth chart, not safety Brandon Snyder

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Iowa senior Josey Jewell returned to Iowa’s depth chart as the starting middle linebacker for the game Saturday against Minnesota, the school released Monday.

Free safety Brandon Snyder wasn’t so fortunate.

Jewell ended his streak of 37 consecutive starts with a shoulder injury on Saturday against Northwestern. Snyder, who made his season debut against Illinois on Oct. 7 after sustaining an ACL tear in his left knee in the spring, did not face the Wildcats because of a knee sprain. Jewell was tabbed as the starter on the depth chart, while Snyder was unlisted.

On his Sunday night conversation on Iowa’s athletics website, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz seemed positive Jewell would return against the Gophers. As for Snyder, Ferentz said he’s “probably a week or two away.”

There were a few other defensive changes from the depth chart of last week. Matt Nelson opened the Northwestern game at left defensive tackle and now is listed as the starter ahead of Cedrick Lattimore. Brady Reiff, who was Lattimore’s backup on the two-deep from last week, now will fall behind Nathan Bazata at right defensive tackle.

“Coach [Reese] Morgan said, ‘Hey, you’re going to be starting this week,'” Matt Nelson said after the loss Saturday. “Everybody’s a little dinged up, and I was excited for it but obviously with the result I’m disappointed.”

After an ankle injury sidelined him for nearly two full games, Manny Rugamba returned to the starting lineup at right cornerback ahead of Michael Ojemudia on Saturday. The depth chart now reflects that change.

With Snyder out, Jake Gervase started at free safety last week. His backup is freshman Geno Stone. The strong safety spot last week remained open between Amani Hooker and Miles Taylor. This week, Hooker is listed as the starter.

Additionally, Iowa running back James Butler was not listed. He was cleared for practice last week but did not play. Butler rotated snaps with Akrum Wadley early in the season before suffering a dislocated right elbow.

The Hawkeyes (4-3, 1-3 Big Ten) battle the Gophers (4-3, 1-3 Big Ten) for the Floyd of Rosedale at 6:35 p.m. ET/5:35 p.m. CT at Kinnick Stadium on FOX Sports 1.
