Iowa athletic director Gary Barta has prostate cancer, the university announced Tuesday, and will take an extended leave of absence to undergo surgery and treatment.
In his absence, Deputy Director of Athletics Barbara Burke will run the department.
Barta became Iowa’s AD in 2006 after assuming the same role at Wyoming the previous four years. He’s also been an athletic department administrator at Northern Iowa and Washington.
In March of 2016, Barta was one of four recipients of the Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year Award.
