Iowa AD Gary Barta fighting cancer; Anthony Rizzo loves the Kinnick Wave

Iowa football is always the main topic in Iowa Breakfast Club, Land of 10’s daily Hawkeyes notebook — but we cover news, notes and analysis across Hawkeyes sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Iowa football, recruiting, basketball and more.

Tough news

Iowa athletic director Gary Barta is taking a leave to absence for prostate cancer surgery. Coach Kirk Ferentz gave his support to Barta on Tuesday. So did other Big Ten athletic directors, as Jeremiah Davis of the Cedar Rapids Gazette reported. Expect Barta to fight the cancer with everything he has. His history, as Land of 10 explains, is all the proof you of need of that.

Claiming the top spot

Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo is a fan of the Kinnick Wave. He called it the best tradition in college football.

New man on campus

Inserting freshman right tackle Tristan Wirfs into the starting lineup was vital to the offensive line success against Illinois last week. His development is vital to improved offensive line play the rest of the season and it’s a good thing Iowa’s new mentality for the guys up front is geared perfectly for Wirfs’ development. Let Land of 1o explain.

Youngsters looking like veterans

Ten newcomers, in their first-year of eligibility and months removed from attending high school classes, are playing for the Hawkeyes. Land of 10 examines why they are playing so quickly and what it means for the program.

Mid-year review

How has quarterback Nathan Stanley looked in the first half of the season? Matthew Bain of the Des Moines Register dives into Stanley’s play and comes away pretty impressed.

Nothing comes easy

Ferentz explained the frustration of offensive lineman Boone Myers stemming from his season-long ankle injury. The Hawkeyes hope a week of rest will help, but they are taking the situation day-by-day and will evaluate later, like after the bye week, to see if he is ready for Northwestern on Oct. 21.
