Iowa athletic director Gary Barta is taking a leave to absence for prostate cancer surgery. Coach Kirk Ferentz gave his support to Barta on Tuesday. So did other Big Ten athletic directors, as Jeremiah Davis of the Cedar Rapids Gazette reported. Expect Barta to fight the cancer with everything he has. Inserting freshman right tackle Tristan Wirfs into the starting lineup was vital to the offensive line success against Illinois last week. Ferentz explained the frustration of offensive lineman Boone Myers stemming from his season-long ankle injury. The Hawkeyes hope a week of rest will help, but they are taking the situation day-by-day and will evaluate later, like after the bye week, to see if he is ready for Northwestern on Oct. 21.
