Injured Auburn LG Mike Horton, CB Javaris Davis, CB Jamel Dean will practice ahead of LSU trip

AUBURN, Ala. — There’s at least “a chance” a few of Auburn football’s injured key starters will play at LSU on Saturday.

Offensive guard Mike Horton suffered an ankle injury early during practice last week and re-injured it in the win over Ole Miss. Coach Gus Malzahn isn’t sure of his status, but will find out more when his team works out on Tuesday.

“Mike Horton will give it a shot in practice today,” Malzahn said. “We’ll see how he does. He definitely wants to paly but we’ll see how he does. I’ll know probably more by Thursday , his complete status.”

If the sophomore can’t go, Malzahn said he remains confident about the offensive line.

“The way that we ended the game, I would be prepared for that,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of confidence in Prince Tega (Wanogho) and then Austin Golson has the ability … I think he’s played his fifth position last week in six games. It tells you a lot about him, his versatility, which there’s very few players around the country I feel like could do that.”

No. 10 Auburn will need to be prepared for it second trip to a Death Valley this year. This road game will mimic the Week 2 one at Clemson when it comes to physicality.

“Oh yeah, this is always one of those games that it’s usually won up front on both sides of the football,” Malzahn said. “And last year was a very physical game and this year we expect it to be the same. That’s always fun to play a team that’s physical and they usually are and we usually are and it’s usually a good one.”

In a year where SEC defenses have been a focus, Malzahn also touched on the status of two key underclassmen defenders.

Defensive back Javaris Davis was absent from the win over the Rebels and Jamel Dean left the game early after suffering an injury. Both may be available against LSU, but Malzahn isn’t certain yet.

“Both of them will be at our practice today,” Malzahn said. “We’ll see how they do and it’ll be kind of one of those deals. We’ll know later in the week for sure.”
