Indiana-Illinois basketball: Preview

Indiana is in its first year under coach Archie Miller. The Hoosiers have had its up and downs this season and were in the middle of a four-game losing streak. The team has since won two straight and is now 14-12 overall and 7-7 in Big Ten play.

The 7-7 record in conference has Indiana in seventh-place in the conference standings. The Hoosiers are led in both scoring and rebounding by Juwan Morgan.

Morgan is a 6-foot-8 junior forward who is shooting over 59 percent from the field this season, averaging 16.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest. Robert Johnson is the only other Hoosier averaging over 10 points per game, as he is scoring 13.3 per contest. The team’s third leading scorer in terms of average, De’Ron Davis, has played in only 15 games this season and has been out since early January with an achilles injury.

The meeting between Indiana and Illinois will be the second between the two teams this season. In the first matchup, the Fighting Illini won the game, 73-71, which started the Hoosiers’ four-game losing streak in late January.

For Illinois, the team is also in its first year under a new coach. Brad Underwood took over the Fighting Illini after being with Oklahoma State a year ago. Illinois, under Underwood, is currently No. 13 in the Big Ten standings going into this game.

The Fighting Illini are led by Leron Black in scoring, who averages 14.4 points per game. Like Indiana, Illinois has two players averaging at least 10 points per game. Aside from Black, Trent Frazier has averaged 12.3 for the year.

Black also leads the team in rebounding, averaging 5.4 rebounds per contest. Illinois has a 2-11 record in conference play so far this season and got those wins in back-to-back games against Indiana and Rutgers, respectively.

In the prior matchup between these two teams, Black and Frazier combined to score 38 points, making 14-of-27 shots from the field. Indiana had more rebounds, assists, steals and blocks in the game and also shot better from the field, converting on 56 percent of its attempts while Illinois shot 46 percent.
