Impact analysis: John Huggins a versatile DB for Florida’s Todd Grantham

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida landed its first defensive commitment of the Dan Mullen era over the weekend.

John Huggins pledged to the Gators on Sunday following his official visit to UF. The versatility defensive back will sign with Florida on Wednesday despite being a summer enrollee.

Here’s a closer look at  the new Florida commit.

Position: Defensive back

Height: 6-foot

Weight: 200 pounds

High school: Mainland (Daytona Beach, Fla.)

Ranking: No. 32 safety (247Sports composite)

Details of his decision: Huggins committed to Florida State five months ago, but reopened his recruitment on Dec. 1 after FSU coach Jimbo Fisher left for Texas A&M. Florida offered Huggins four days later and he became one of the top targets for new Gators defensive coordinator Todd Grantham. Huggins hit it off with Grantham during their in-home visits and his trip to UF last weekend seal the deal.

How he fits in: Huggins is listed as a 4-star safety by ESPN and Rivals, but will line up at several spots in Florida’s secondary. Grantham plans to move him around in the defensive backfield and Huggins could play cornerback and nickelback in addition to safety. The Gators need help at all three positions, so Huggins will likely settle in wherever he’s needed most.

Chances of playing early: Huggins won’t be an early enrollee, so missing spring practice could prevent him from cracking the starting lineup as a true freshmen. If Huggins stays at safety, he’ll have a chance to compete for playing time in a backup role. His best bet to see the field will be when the Gators go to their dime and nickel packages.
